A little piece of early JAPAN history, reimagined.
This six-badge set features the classic five-member line-up of David Sylvian, Mick Karn, Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri and Rob Dean, together with a sixth badge featuring the unmistakable early JAPAN logo.
The six badges are presented with a black-and-white JAPAN backing card, and every set also comes with a FREE A5 distressed gig flyer, specially created to accompany the collection.
The flyer is an imagined piece inspired by JAPAN’s appearances at the Hurrah Club in New York in November 1978. Designed in the spirit of late-70s club advertising, it has been deliberately given the rough, imperfect character of something that might have been photocopied, pinned to a wall and survived for nearly fifty years.
About the flyer
The flyer is newly created and is not an original 1978 concert flyer.
Ink smudges, faded areas, uneven blacks, marks, distressed printing and other apparent imperfections are all intentional parts of the design. They are there to recreate the feel of an original late-1970s gig flyer rather than a pristine modern reproduction.
A note about the dates
The flyer advertises the Hurrah shows as Thursday 9th and Friday 10th November 1978. These dates have been used deliberately.
Some later online gig databases list different dates for JAPAN’s Hurrah appearances. However, contemporary press advertising for the shows gives 9th and 10th November, while the band’s surviving flight itinerary places them in New York from 8th–12th November.
For this piece, we have followed the contemporary advertising - the dates that would have been seen by somebody looking at an advert or flyer promoting the shows at the time - rather than retrospectively changing them to match later online databases.
