The image comes from Stephen Holden’s Adolescent Alternatives archive and is used with permission. Holden’s book Adolescent Alternatives is a beautifully obsessive document of early JAPAN fandom: part personal archive, part visual history, part love letter to the period when the band were still raw, strange, glamorous and on the edge of becoming something entirely their own. This photograph was chosen as the cover image for the book and captures Sylvian during those early live years, before JAPAN’s image and sound moved into the more refined, art-pop world they would later become known for.
For this t-shirt, the photograph has been reworked as a stark white halftone print and paired with the raw JAPAN logo above - giving it the feel of a lost late-70s fan-club artefact.
